Happy Hour with Councilmember Charlene Wang on Thursday, July 24
Join us for our summer happy hour on Thursday, July 24 from 5:30pm – 7:00pm at Portal (1611 2nd Ave.). Oakland’s new District 2 Councilmember Charlene Wang will be joining us – please help us welcome her!

This event aims to provide a casual environment for local advocates, elected officials, and OakDOT staff to meet. Show up to mingle, meet other transporters, and talk shop about how we improve mobility and vibrancy in our city. Let us know what burning questions you might have. We’ll do our best to illuminate these topics so we all have a better understanding of what challenges we’re facing. We are planning to review OakDOT’s draft Slow Streets Network, see below. We’re looking forward to a great discussion!
OakDOT’s Proposed Slow Streets Network
Oakland Department of Transportation (OakDOT) is proposing a Slow Streets network to allow travel at human-powered speeds while welcoming residents to use the streets as public spaces. More information on the OakDOT Slow Streets program can be found here.
At last week’s BPAC (Oakland Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commision) Infrastructure Committee meeting, OakDOT’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Program staff presented draft recommendations for the revised Slow Streets network. Their presentation outlines a step-wise process that builds upon the 2019 Bike Plan. An interactive map can be found here.

We encourage you to examine your neighborhood’s Slow Streets and make suggestions using your local knowledge. Residents are welcome to submit feedback to slowstreets@oaklandca.gov throughout the summer.
Community-Led Traffic Calming Pilot Program Beginning Soon!
After two long years of advocacy, community interest, meetings, and legislating, we are on the cusp of seeing OakDOT debut a new type of permit program that will enable local community members to install temporary traffic calming elements in their neighborhoods. Think restaurant parklets but for schools, businesses, and neighbors wanting to slow car speeds and improve the safety of their local streets.
We are expecting OakDOT to publish the process and details to the city website no later than July 18th, at which point they will begin accepting permit applications. We will hope to see more temporary traffic circles, curb extensions, and more to hold the line and provide proofs of concepts while we work on their permanent counterparts! We’ll send another email once it goes live with more details.
